‘Amish Orchard Delight’ – the aroma alone gets everyone asking, ‘Is it ready yet?’

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning.
In a separate bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples and toss to coat evenly.
Transfer the apple mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
In another bowl, combine the remaining flour, oats, and brown sugar. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the apples.
Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Let cool slightly before serving.

Variations & Tips

For a nutty twist, add 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans to the oat topping. If you have picky eaters who aren’t fans of oats, you can substitute the oats with crushed graham crackers for a different texture. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free oats and substitute the all-purpose flour with almond flour. You can also experiment with different types of apples; a mix of tart and sweet varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp can add depth to the flavor.
